Honeywell Lyric T5 WiFi Thermostat

Honeywell Lyric T5

Smart or programmable thermostats have begun to replace the traditional dial ones. If you have an HVAC system at home then a connected thermostat is a worthwhile investment. While my thermostat was quite energy-efficient, it would require regular maintenance and would often have wiring issues. That is when my hunt for a wifi-enable thermostat began. I was tired of spending excess money on an old thermostat and so came across many options that were available in the market.

One of the thermostats that caught my eye and that was under my budget was the Honeywell Lyric T5. While the features it offers are basic and not as advanced as other models in the market, it still had adequate features that one would want in a thermostat. It is easily programmable, can be controlled from the smartphone, is compatible with several smart home systems, and also has geofencing! It’s a good bargain for the price that it comes for. It’s amongst the most affordable thermostats available.

This review will help you decide whether it’s the thermostat for your home.

Things to consider before buying smart thermostats

Who should buy it?

If you already have a C-wire connection then most of the smart thermostats will be very easy to install for you. Moreover, if you have high-speed wifi then the smart thermostats will be great for you as you will be able to adjust the settings with the smartphone apps. Moreover, most of the smart thermostats are compatible with smart home systems such as Amazon’s Alexa so, if you have one of those this purchase will be useful for you. As long as you have an HVAC system, you will be able to find a thermostat that is compatible with it.

Factors to consider before buying Wifi Thermostats:

  • Power: The power of the thermostat and HVAC system that you have already installed should be compatible with each other. Most thermostats are compatible with the low voltage systems, so make sure you check the compatibility of the thermostat you wish to install it with.

  • C-Wire requirement: Non-programmable thermostats often need you to have a C-wire connection. It helps provide consistent connectivity to the wifi and display. Depending on whether or not you already have a C-wire connection you should go for a thermostat accordingly because then you will need some rewiring.

  • Geofencing: Geofencing allows you to save up on energy by detecting whether your smartphone is in the range of the thermostat. Once it doesn’t detect your phone it goes in “away mode” which means it will adjust the temperature automatically.

  • Ease of installation: Some thermostats can be quite complicated to install and might require you to get professional help. Thus, make sure that the installation is easy if you plan on installing it yourself because it can be quite difficult for some thermostats.

Presenting the product

The Honeywell Lyric T5 with its geofencing feature and compatibility with Alexa and Siri is quite appealing for the price it is for. It doesn’t have as many advanced features as the other models and brands out there, however, it is still a good value thermostat. Not only is it energy star certified, but also comes with smart alerts and a geofencing feature. It is essentially a slightly cheaper model (about $50 less) than the Lyric Round from their collection, but many people still prefer the Honeywell Lyric T5 because of its sleeker design and interface.

It also has 2-stage heating and cooling which shows it won’t have connectivity issues with most HVAC systems. Another cheaper model is the Lux/Geo that too supports 2 stage heating and cooling systems. While the Honeywell Lyric T5 does not have automatic scheduling that others such as the Nest Learning thermostat do, it can still automatically adjust the temperature when your phone isn’t in range. As far as the compatibility to smart home systems is concerned it can only connect with Amazon’s Alexa and Apple HomeKit. Unlike the  Ecobee 3 Lite (in the same price range) the Honeywell Lyric T5 is not compatible with other smart home devices.

Unfortunately, the Honeywell Lyric T5 does not have motion or humidity sensors. Another option in the same price range is the Nest E thermostat, however, it’s not a good option for you if you have the Apple HomeKit as it is not compatible with it.

Pros

Cons

Features & Benefits

Let’s look at some of the features that the Nest V3 has to offer that make it a must-have:

1. Lyric Mobile app

While the device has a touch screen display, you can also control the thermostat from the Lyric mobile app. The app is also quite easy to navigate through thanks to its simple design. The app also allows geofencing which is a very good way for you to conserve energy when you’re not at home. You can also turn on the “Away Mode” from the phone when you are leaving.

2. Warranty

The Honeywell Lyric T5 has a 2-year warranty if bought from a store and a 5-year warranty if bought through contractors.

3. Smart Alerts

These alerts remind you when it is time for maintenance of the parts. For instance when you need to replace the filter or when the temperature is strangely low. Other such warnings are not only delivered to you on your phone but are also displayed on the screen of the thermostat.

4. Scheduling

Time-based or location-based scheduling are both available options. The schedule that you set according to the times for the upcoming week is pretty convenient. But location-based scheduling (that happens because of geofencing) allows it to automatically switch to the energy-saving mode.

Social Proof

When I was doing my research, I came across many positive reviews. Many people appreciate the ease of installation of the Honeywell Lyric T5, especially those who already have the C-wire connection. According to one customer, the setup time was only 30 minutes. Many people also reported that the geofencing feature helped save them a lot of electric costs.

A lot of people liked the display as it gives a simplistic vibe to the home. Most of all, the users loved the price of the thermostat. That is because it offers the most basic features of a smart thermostat. That is pretty much what most people want.

Conclusion

If you’re someone who is looking for a budget-friendly thermostat, that does not have very advanced features. The Honeywell Lyric T5 is a good choice. It is highly recommended for older people because of the simplicity. It has many smart features and can be connected to a few smart home ecosystems. However, it still has its drawbacks as well. It has no motion-sensing capabilities and does not have advanced features such as those found in more high-end thermostats.

Other than that it is a reliable choice as long as you are willing to compromise on the advanced features
