Those who have HVAC systems in their houses know that it is important to choose one that is not only energy efficient but also adds to your overall convenience at home. As my dial thermostat started malfunctioning almost every month, I finally decided to invest in a new one. There began my search for a wifi thermostat (recommended by my electrician). Not only was I tired of spending money on getting it fixed but was also tired of heating/cooling tripping repeatedly. That is how I came across the Nest V3 thermostat.
The Nest V3 (3rd Generation) thermostat is one such wifi-enabled system for those who have HVAC installed in their homes. It comes with all smart home capabilities and is an upgrade from the Nest 2. It has a much bigger display, higher resolution, and the sensors are much more active. This review will help you know all that you need to know before investing in Nest V3.
Things to consider before buying the Nest V3
Who should buy it?
The Nest V3 is made for people of all ages, thanks to its interactive interface and simplistic design. It is ideal for you if you are looking for an energy-saving thermostat, as it specifically caters to that. Essentially, the ease of use makes it suitable for everyone who does not know a lot about HVAC systems and just wants the thermostat to do all the work. The following will be useful for when you want to purchase a smart thermostat.
Factors to consider before buying Wifi Thermostats:
Power: The voltage your wifi thermostat uses should be compatible with your HVAC system. There are high voltage ones (110V, 240V) that are usually made for the electric system and then there are the low voltage ones. Low voltage (24V) thermostats are mostly made for ACs, heat pumps, and boilers
Programmable vs. non-programmable: Programmable ones allow you to create different schedules for the week, weekend, or specific days. Often they come with a couple of temperature settings that you can choose. Non-programmable ones are more traditional and do not have the option to program your schedules.
Learning Features: These features are enabled with the help of sensors such as motion or proximity. For instance, many thermostats know when no one is around and so they go into “away” mode, which helps save up on electricity.
Geofencing: Geofencing is used to detect whether your smartphone is in the neighborhood of the thermostat. You can give the commands to your thermostat for it to go in “away mode” when the smartphone isn’t within a specified number of feet.
Presenting the product
The Nest V3 is similar to the original model but is sleeker and larger. Unlike the previous models, its design comprises a larger display screen and has a much higher resolution of 480 x 480 whereas the previous model had 320 x 320. What’s interesting about the Nest V3 is that it has 10 sensors! This makes the model much more superior as the last one only had 3. Like the rest though, it is compatible with most home systems such as Amazon’s Alexa, Google Home, and IFTTT.
It’s mostly compatible with 24V HVAC systems and entails 3 stage heating, 2 stage cooling, 3-speed fans, in addition to humidifier and dehumidifiers. The Nest V3, unlike other wifi thermostats like Honeywell, Emerson Sensei, or the Lux/Geo has an auto-schedule programming feature that itself learns the temperature settings that you enable in the first week. It then follows that particular schedule but you still have the liberty to make changes. It is compatible with other Nest devices such as WeMo switches, Wink Hub, and Haiku fans.
Furthermore, its Auto-away feature and energy-usage reports also make it a must-have. However, it does not have remote room sensors, so if that is important to you then perhaps the Ecobee 3 is a better option for you.
Features & Benefits
Let’s look at some of the features that the Nest V3 has to offer that make it a must-have:
1. Safety Mode
Frozen pipes in winter are very common especially when your thermostat has been sitting idle. The safety mode in the Nest V3 activates itself if the temperature drops below the pre-set one. You also get notified when the temperature returns to the normal one.
2. Eco Mode
This thermostat is great for someone who has to leave the house multiple times. If you forget to switch it off before leaving, the motion sensors will detect inactivity and switch to the Eco Mode, which saves energy consumption.
Instead of the sensors waiting for any motion close to the thermostat, the Nest V3 instantly turns on as soon as someone enters the room.
Sometimes when the sunlight falls on to thermostats, they automatically adjust the temperature according to that. However, the Nest V3 does not let sunlight to interfere with the settings that you want.
5. Filter change reminders
Instead of relying on your memory to change the filters of the thermostat, the system itself notifies when it requires a change. It could happen once a month, once in six months, or once a year, depending on your usage.
When it comes to the design and features, the Nest V3 is one of the best programmable thermostats out there. It has a lot of upgrades, improvements, and new features from its previous models, and is overall the best apart from its absence of remote sensors. Not only does it save costs on electricity but also saves up on maintenance, for instance, its ability to prevent your pipes from freezing in the winter.
Of course with the kind of features it offers, it is also quite expensive. However, if you are unsatisfied with your current one then you should seriously consider it if it falls under your budget. Otherwise, the article mentions other alternatives as well.
