Honeywell Home T9 RCHT9510WF

HVAC systems nowadays are usually connected with thermostats. Depending on the temperature you want indoors, thermostats help you to do just that.

Nowadays, the thermostats are connected to the wifi so that you can operate them from your phones. My search for smart wifi began after my traditional manual thermostat stopped working.

There were quite a few options in the market with brands names like Honeywell, Ecobee, Nest, etc.

The one thermostat that fell in my budget and seemed very appealing to me was the Honeywell Home T9 RCHT9510WF. The fact that this model’s sensors were so advanced, was what set it apart from others in the same price.

Other than that it consists of all the features that are normally found wifi-enabled thermostats. It supports numerous types of HVAC systems, has two types of scheduling, namely; time-based and location-based, also known as geofencing.

This review will tell you all that you need to know about the Honeywell Home T9. It works with almost all smart home ecosystems including Samsung’s SmartThings as well as IFTTT, which are rare for most thermostats.

Things to consider before buying smart thermostats
Who should buy it?

Smart thermostats are quite useful for someone who has an HVAC system already installed in their homes. Since they’re smart, you must have high-speed internet, that works all the time for you to be able to use the features.

Moreover, it is ideal for people that are handicapped or like to do things from the comfort of their rooms, especially during the night. All you need is the mobile app for the thermostat and you can control the temperature without getting up.

That being said, smart thermostats are not a cheap investment as they last for years, so you should get one after you have done your research.

Factors to consider before buying Wifi Thermostats:

You should take the following into account before buying a smart thermostat.

  • Voltage: There are usually three types of power requirements of HVAC systems: high voltage or 110V (or 240V), low-voltage (24V), and millivolt power. Before you purchase a thermostat, you must make sure that your thermostat is compatible with the power of the HVAC system.

  • Staged Heating and Cooling: Your thermostat will also specify whether you have a single-stage, two-stage, or variable capacity system. Your HVAC system should be compatible with the stage of the thermostat. Although it should be kept in mind that two-stage systems are compatible with single-stage thermostats too though.

  • C Wire: The C-wire requirement is pretty important to keep in mind before purchasing the thermostat. Most wifi thermostats need a C wire to be able to turn it on. If you already have a C wire connection installed that installing the thermostat will be short and simple for you.

Presenting the product

The Honeywell Home T9 RCHT9510WF is similar to the Honeywell Lyric T5, but has a white exterior and comes with motion sensors, unlike its predecessor. A major update from the T5 is the addition of the three sensors.

Moreover, if you do not have a C-wire then it also comes with a C-wire adapter to aid in your installation.

Similar to the Ecobee Voice thermostat, the Honeywell Home T9 has occupancy sensors that allow it to know when the room has people but is almost $100 cheaper. While the T9 is famous for its compatibility with other smart home systems, it still does not support Apple HomeKit.

However, it supports Amazon’s Alexa, Microsoft Cortana, Smartthings, and IFTTT.

If you want a similar thermostat the Ecobee 3 Lite is a good cheaper alternative but does not have a remote sensor. The Honeywell HomeT9 however, has a more traditional touch while the Ecobee 3 Lite has a modern one.

The Nest E thermostat is also similar in terms of price to the T9 and Ecobee 3.

If your budget is more of if you want your thermostat to have advanced features like the behavior-learning function offered in the Nest Learning thermostats, then the Honeywell Home T9 isn’t for you. Although many people consider Honeywell’s sensors as the best out of all the other brands.

Pros

  • Compatible with many home ecosystems
  • Touch screen display
  • Comes with a remote sensor
  • Sensors for humidity, presence, and temperature
  • Programmable
  • Dual-band wifi

Cons

  • Cannot simultaneously use time-based and location-based scheduling
  • You have to mount the remote sensors on the wall
  • Cannot use all functions of IFTTT
  • Not connected with other Honeywell devices

Features & Benefits

The following features make the Honeywell Home T9 a must-have:

1. Sensors

Apart from LED indicators the device also can detect temperatures, humidity, and motion. One can activate 20 of them in an average home. All you need to do is replace its 3 AAA batteries annually. The sensors have a 900MHz spectrum radio which is quite high in comparison to other brands.

2. Monthly Reports

The Honeywell Home T9 generates energy reports every month so that it can help you use it more efficiently. Not only that, but it also sends reports about maintenance, for example, it will also send a notification to your phone to let you know that the filter needs changing.

3. Away and Auto Modes

When you’re not home you can enable the Away Mode from your smartphone but if you forget then you can also enable Auto Mode which detects whether the smartphone is in range or not (geofencing).

Social Proof

My hunt for a smart thermostat led me to many customer reviews and they had a lot to say about the Honeywell Home T9. Most praise its installation process, which seemed quite simple to many, and most did not require professional help.

They did not have difficulty with the installation especially if they already had a smart thermostat installed. Moreover, the app seems to be useful even though the device has a touchscreen, and navigating that is also easy.

A user also said that it sends alerts for when the wifi stops working, which helped him as otherwise, they would not even notice.

The interface too was praised for its simple design and ease of use. It offers many modes thanks to its sensors so people like that they can find a mode that suits them better.

The sensors happen to be the most valued feature of this model, as they make their night lives a lot more comfortable.

Conclusion

While the Honeywell HomeT9 thermostat does not have advanced learning abilities like the Nest Learning models, it still is moderately advanced compared to other brands. Its sensors set it apart from others in its price range such as the Ecobee 3 Lite.

T may not be the most aesthetical looking smart thermostat out there but it has useful functions. It is an upgrade from your last thermostat if it did not have sensors.

Its smart home integration is also diverse but if you have the Apple HomeKit and want your entire ecosystem to be in sync then this is not the thermostat for you. The review mentions other alternatives that might suit you better.

Other than that it is an overall good bargain for a wifi-enabled thermostat.
