Johnson Controls GLAS Smart Thermostat Review

Technology is slowly replacing manual machinery with computerized one. Wifi-enabled thermostats too are replacing the dial ones. They make our lives easier by allowing us to operate and change the thermostat settings without getting up from our beds etc.

Instead of going up to the thermostat to adjust the temperature, you can simply use a mobile app that does it for you. What’s more is that if you already have a smart home ecosystem, then you can give it voice commands to make adjustments to the thermostat, given that the thermostat is compatible with it.

While there are many brands for smart thermostats nowadays such as Nest, Lux Geo, Emerson Sensi, Johnson Controls, Ecobee, etc, not all of them offer the same features.

Some offer more advanced features that the basic ones do not offer. Choosing one can be a difficult task as there is so much diversity out there. Initially, I made the mistake of buying a thermostat that was not compatible with my HVAC system and I had to replace it later. Thus, choosing a thermostat that works well with other systems in your home can be a tedious job.

When I was looking for a thermostat for myself, I came across a very reliable one by Johnson Controls GLAS Smart Thermostat. This review will tell you all that you need to know about the Johnson Controls GLAS Smart Thermostat and whether it is suitable for you.

Who should buy smart thermostats?

If you’re tired of paying hefty amounts for electricity then getting a smart thermostat is good for you. While the initial cost of buying a smart thermostat will be higher than that of a dial one, in the long term a smart thermostat will help you save up on energy costs more. Smart thermostats are quite energy-efficient and require minimal involvement from you.

Smart thermostat features vary from one model to the other, so at the end of the day it comes down to what you want from the thermostat. If you want automatic scheduling then you should go for a smart thermostat that either comes with geofencing or learning capabilities.

The latter is usually found in high-end models that are more expensive than the one that comes with just geofencing. Thus, if you are someone who wants the system to automatically configure thermostat settings then investing in a smart thermostat is ideal for you.

Lastly, working wifi and an HVAC system are must-haves before you invest in a smart thermostat, so if you have them both then you should consider buying a wifi-enabled thermostat as it will add convenience to your life.

Factors to consider before buying Wifi Thermostats:

Wiring

It is important to examine your wiring of the HVAC system and old thermostat before you get a new one. While most systems work with low-voltage wires, some thermostats, especially the newer ones often need a C-wire (common wire). The C-wire may sound like an additional hassle but it ensures that your wifi and touch features run smoothly.

Compatibility with HVAC system

It is pertinent that you check that the thermostat you wish to buy is compatible with your HVAC system. For instance, thermostats like the Nest E does not support 2-stage heat systems, whereas the Nest Learning thermostat supports them. Some brands like Honeywell Home also offer online compatibility tests to add to your convenience.

Ease of installation

While the non-connected thermostats are relatively easy to wire and install into your HVAC system, many also come with extensive installation guides. However, at times the installation is not as simple as others and may require you to get the installation done by a professional.

Display

Many thermostats manufactured now come with touchscreen displays, which are appreciated by many users. However, some smart thermostats still do not touch screens but may have all the other features. This is something that may be a requirement for some, so make sure you know which one you want.

Johnson Controls GLAS Smart Thermostat and its Alternatives

The Johnson Controls GLAS Smart Thermostat is a programmable touch screen thermostat that is known for its reporting of the indoor and outdoor air quality and humidity.

It helps you stay connected to the HVAC system whether you are at home or in another country, you can even connect with multiple thermostats with one GLAS mobile app. It is also famous for its occupancy sensor that’ adds to your comfort at home. Apart from that, it integrates with many home assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa and Google Home.

Nest Learning thermostat

While it is quite true that you won’t be able to find a touchscreen thermostat that looks as modern and high-tech as this one, it still is quite expensive for the price it comes for. It’s even more expensive than the Nest Learning thermostat which is known for its learning capabilities and automation.

The GLAS however, does not have any such learning capabilities despite having indoor and outdoor sensors. Although it does provide more information on the screen compared to other brands like Nest or Ecobee.

Ecobee 3 Lite

The Ecobee 3 Lite is almost half the price of the GLAS and offers pretty much the same basic thermostat features but it does not have the same attractive touchscreen display.

The Ecobee 3 Lite, however, also comes with smart sensors. It also has greater compatibility with smart home devices including Apple HomeKit and Samsung SmartThings. However, you will probably not find Cortana assistant in other smart thermostats which makes the GLAS unique.

Lux/Geo

The GLAS does not support remote sensors, which is tragic because many users want them. Additionally, the competitors have that edge over the GLAS. Another option if you want an automatic temperature adjustment feature is the Lux/Geo.

It comes with an auto-schedule feature. It learns the temperature settings in the first week or so without any involvement from the user. After that, it sets the temperature according to what it has learned about your patterns.

Pros

  • Compatible with Cortana Voice assistant, Alexa, and Google home
  • Air Quality updates
  • Attractive and easy to read display
  • Eight different temperature points
  • OLED Touchscreen
  • Energy-star certified

Cons

  • Expensive
  • No support for remote sensor
  • The smartphone app is slow

Features

1. OLED Touchscreen

This is one of the fanciest LED screens available in thermostats in the market. Although the resolution is low (480p x 272p), it is still bright and easy to use and read. Moreover, unlike other touchscreen thermostats, it does not leave fingerprints after use.

2. Sensors

The GLAS thermostat comes with front sensors that measure the air quality and temperatures, although it is not compatible with remote sensors. Measuring indoor air quality is quite a unique feature in addition to measuring VOCs, humidity, and, carbon dioxide. However, instead of automatically adjusting the temperature or switching on the fan when the levels are too low or high, it simply notifies you.

3. Cortana Integration

Unlike other smart thermostats, the GLAS supports the Cortana voice assistant as well. Its software runs on the Windows 10 IOT core. Thus, it uses the Windows 10 keyboard for when you need to type something such as the password. It can also be controlled by the commanding Cortana to adjust the temperature once integrated.

What users think of the Johnson Controls GLAS Smart Thermostat

While I was researching the Johnson Controls GLAS smart thermostat, I came across many encouraging reviews. Many users liked the display and interface. They think that it is one of a kind and very modern and attractive.

The process of setting it up and integrating other smart home systems is also quite easy and simple according to the users. Many found that the indoor air quality stats were quite insightful. It helped them to know when the filter needed a change.

Many users felt that that the Cortana assistant was very hard to find in other smart thermostats. Therefore, they appreciated it on that front as well.

Final thoughts on the Johnson Controls GLAS Smart Thermostat

The Johnson Controls GLAS Smart Thermostat indeed is one of the most attractive smart thermostats out there. Its measurement of air quality and the touchscreen make it unique.

However, a lot of people are not as satisfied with the price it comes for. Since it does not come with remote sensors or learning capabilities that can automatically adjust the temperature, many users prefer other models over this.

Moreover, people find the smartphone app to be a little slow for their liking. However, since it keeps updating the app, people are hopeful they will add more features for their ease of use.

Despite its uniqueness and Cortana speaker, it is still quite expensive. There are cheaper alternatives in the market that offer more than this. This review discusses some of them. Overall the Johnson Controls GLAS Smart Thermostat is a good investment. Especially, if you want a very attractive and modern looking smart thermostat.
